Abstract

Aphasia is a language impairment resulting from cerebral damage in persons who have been competent users of their own language. Doctors caring for the aphasic patients were among the first, who were interested in studying the relationship between brain and language. Although they made detailed clinical and anatomical descriptions, it was until the investigations were made from the linguistic framemark that it was possible to explain the language deficits of the patients. Nowadays the study of the aphasias comes from the linguistic and the cognitive points of view.
