Abstract

This paper revises the causes that have made English the lingua franca, or hegemonic language in today’s world. First, the concept of lingua franca is explored in its historical context. Then the overwhelming military, economic, scientific and technological developments of Great Britain and of the United States of America are pointed out as the forces behind the spread of the English language. Finally some implications of the dominance of English in the academic field are considered.
