The Railroad as a Symbol of Progress in Latin American Culture: two 19th Century Paintings
Abstract
This article explores the social significance of two paintings of 19th century realistic art, one by the Mexican José María Velasco and the other by the Argentinian Ángel Della Valle. Both have the central ingredient of the social imaginary that the dominant groups wanted to establish: the railroad as a symbol of modernity and progress.Downloads
