Abstract

Here, I shall examine a yet unstudied novel: Julio Sesto’s La tórtola del Ajusco, published in 1915. By activating theories of collective memory as elaborated by German archeologist Jan Assman, I claim that Sesto’s novel constitutes a ‘figure of memory’. I shall also invoke the theories of German philosopher Walter Benjamin as well as those of literary critic Raymond Williams, and thus evaluate La tórtola del Ajusco as a type of vulgar evolutionist historicism—literary intervention that privileges a ‘residual’ or even expired culture.
