“The dream of the Pongo” and the interpretation of a culture
Abstract
In this essay I highlight the fondness that the author had for a story told to him by a comunero from the Andes that he then recreated –though preserving the original oral intention. Arguedas is aware of the difficulty in maintaining the original story versus using literary creativity. Vargas Llosa’s viewpoint and his failure to understand the Native’s universe are studied. I describe the similarities between Arguedas’ and Jesus Morales Bermudez’s linking of radical projects, for example Arguedas with Quechua and Spanish, and Morales Bermudez with Spanish and Chol from northern Chiapas.Downloads
