Under Suantovitus’ Eyes and Saint Vitus: a Mosaic of a Pagan Festivity
Abstract
The works of Saxo Grammaticus and Helmoldus, two of the most important historians of the Twelfth Century, describe the festivities dedicated to Suantovitus, one of the principal Slavic deities. He was worshipped in a temple at mount Akron, which was the goal of numerous Slavic pilgrims. Despite not describing particularities about Suantovitus as a god, those historians describe the festivities with detail: sacrifices, fireplaces and the reading of auspicia.Downloads
