Mary Shelley and Manon Roland
Abstract
Mary W. Shelley wrote over 50 life stories for The Cabinet Cyclopædia. I analyze in Madame Roland's biography the notion of biography as a vehicle for spreading “the causes of liberty”: republicanism, liberalism, and new roles of women in marriage and society. I propose that she developed different strategies to overcome the resistance of her readers and the book market.Downloads
